Paul Weller & Steve Cradock - Liza Radley

Paradiso Amsterdam 14-09-07.

Video: Liza Radley

Liza Radley (lyrics)

Liza Radley - see the girl with long hair
See her creeping ’cross summer lawns at midnight
And all the people in the town where we live say
She’s not quite right
But she don’t fit in with a small town

They just can’t understand why she’s got to be free
And for their lives only, she cries

Liza Radley - see her jump through loneliness
Liza Radley - take me when you go

And all the people in the town where we live say
She’s not quite right
But she don’t fit in with a small town

They just can’t understand why she’s got to be free
And for their lives only, she cries

Liza Radley - I pledge myself to you alone
Then she kiss my face and says love means nothing at all
She kiss my face and says life means nothing at all

Paul Weller & Steve Cradock - Shadow of the Sun

Video: Shadow of the Sun

Shadow of the Sun (lyrics)

Do you still feel the same way about it
Like you always said you would
Or has time re-written everything
Like you never dreamt it could
Remember when we wanted to fly forever
On a magic carpet ride
Well forever seems a long time
Cutting us down in size
No matter how hard we try -

And I could see all I had done
Just chasing dreams across the fields
In the shadow of the sun

I plan to have it all while I'm still young
And chase the fields across my dreams
In the shadow of the sun
In the shadow of the sun

Once upon a time I might have told you
But now nothing seems that plain
However much we're changing
There are some things the same
And those same things still say

And I could see all I had done
Just chasing dreams across the fields
In the shadow of the sun

I plan to have it all while I'm still young
And chase the fields across my dreams
In the shadow of the sun
In the shadow of the sun

Natt Weller

Natt WellerDavid Smyth talks to Paul Weller's son, Natt, about London's club scene and casts his eye over what's new on the net.

NOW WELLER JR IS IN THE CLUB

London's club scene is moribund, unimaginative and severely lacking in thrills. So says 19-year-old Natt Weller. With that surname (Dad is Paul, Mum is Style Council singer Dee C Lee) you might expect him to be strapping on a guitar and faithfully following in father's footsteps but a glance at this strikingly glam teenager tells you that he's got a more individual furrow to plough.

There is a music career in the offing, of course - young Weller is currently recording his first EP but cites the theatrical rock and pop of My Chemical Romance, Marilyn Manson and Gwen Stefani as influences rather than The Jam. In the meantime, he's putting his glitzy stamp on the capital's clubland with his own monthly clubnight, Dangerous to Know.

Whirlpools End (lyrics)

The sun came out & hung above
Over our heads but far enough to see
A bomb exploding in another town
Children choking on a poison cloud
While on the streets, where lovers once walked,
Side by side in idle talk
Bullets fall like unholy rain
People change as the panic sets in -
A frightened baby by her dead mother's side
In a brutal world where there's nowhere
To run, hide or cry -

Now nothing feels the same way -
Feel like I'm changing again -
Upon a street with no name
It's hard to find me again -

I ran as fast as my feet could fly
Down country lanes where I took my time-
Time like a hound snapping at my heels
I got past thinking so that I could feel -
And like a film playing in my head
I kept on rolling down green Surrey hills -
In Spring-

Now I don't feel the same way
Feel like I'm changing again
Upon a street with no name
It's hard to find me again -
The sun came out & hung above, over our heads
but far enough to see

Paul weller & Gabrielle - Why

Gabrielle, returns with her classy new single, "Why" on September 24th through Universal Music Record Label. The single will be available to download from September 17th.

The idea for "Why" came when Gabrielle was working in the studio with The Boilerhouse Boys. The song is built around a sample from Paul Weller's "Wild Wood" and was one of the final songs Gabrielle wrote for her new album. After recording a demo, the track was re-recorded with Paul Weller playing guitar and singing backing vocals.

Suburban 100 - Paul Weller - Suburban 100

Paul Weller - Suburban 100On 6th September 2007 Suburban 100 is published by Century. Priced at £17.99.
Synopsis

Weller first burst onto the national music scene in 1977 with his first band, The Jam and 2007 heralds their 30 year anniversary. Their single "In The City" took the band into the UK Top 40 for the first time in May 1977. In 1980 The Jam hit number one for the first time with what many believe to be the definitive Paul Weller song, "Going Underground", which was to become in effect the band's signature tune.By the early 1980s, The Jam had become possibly the biggest band in Britain. They became the only band other than The Beatles to perform two songs ("Town Called Malice" and "Precious") on one edition of Top of the Pops (the feat would later also be equalled by Oasis and Manic Street Preachers) At the beginning of 1983 Weller formed a new group called The Style Council, a band at the vanguard of the jazz/pop revival. Weller successfully joined the 'Britpop' movement that gave rise to such bands as Oasis and Blur. Oasis in particular cited being heavily influenced by The Jam. Fans and critics hail Paul's 1994 album "Wild Wood" as one of his finest. The number one selling 1995 album "Stanley Road" took Paul back to the top of the British charts...

From the Inside Flap
It's been thirty years since Paul Weller and The Jam first burst onto the British music scene, and throughout that time the music and lyrics that have been acclaimed, imitated and loved by so many have revealed to us all, something of the man behind them.

In this the only selection of Weller's lyrics, may be found those songs that span the decades – from the much loved, to the lesser known. Here, the frustration and boredom of suburban life that fuelled Weller’s early writing is palpable and so too is the raging but poignant response to Thatcher's Britain. Alongside this Weller's lyrics, rooted in British culture, tell a story about the love and lives of ordinary people, and offer glimpses into Weller’s own life: his influences and experiences and loves and losses.
From modfather and social commentator to king of Britpop and romantic lyricist, Paul Weller reflects back on his lyrics, revealing what these songs meant to him – both then and now.
